New Medeski, Martin, and Wood “Radiolarians I”

It may have gone unnoticed, but one of my favorite experimental jazz/fusion bands from my high school days Medeski, Martin, and Wood dropped a new album this past September called Radiolarians I on their own label Indirecto.  This is the first part of a three part series designed around a new way to write/record/release music.  For this Radiolarian series the trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood go on brief writing retreats, perform just that new material on tour, then record the material immediately after the tour and release it to the public.  I’m not sure how this affects their musical output (personally it sounds like a good way to keep the creative process fresh for the three of them), but Radiolarians I sounds as good as I’ve ever heard them – full of experimental noise, pauses, tight rhythms, rolling bass lines, and hooks.
