True Widow’s S/T Album Review

It always seems to take me a few listens to digest slocore and shoegaze music to figure out if I truly like it.  On occasion I’m left blown away by it (as I was with Baltimore’s Thrushes).  This happened recently with the band True Widow out of Dallas, TX.  True Widow is the new project of singer/guitarist Dan Phillips and they’ve just released a  new S/T album this past November on End Sounds.  On the album the slow tempo guitars roll in waves with Phillips’ pleasant vocals swimming in their murky waters.  Where True Widow comes alive for me is when bassist Nikki Cage throws her voice into the depths.  “Duelist” is a highlight where she sings lead and she often backs Phillips up on the rest of the album.  The tone of her singing is the perfect counter punch to Phillips’ and bolsters the album into a solid all around release.
