Quick Hits: Rainbow Bridge

rainbow bridge

Lo-fi surf wave mystical garage rock seems to be overflowing the internets these does?  Do these bands make me want to skim the surface of the ocean?  Do they make me want to rent Point Break?  If they all sounded like Olympia, Washington’s Rainbow Bridge… I just might.  True Panther Records (Girls, Lemonade) has released Rainbow Bridge’s Big Wave Rider 7″ and it has me longing for a midnight beach bonfire … or perhaps I’d even settle for a twisted trash can blaze sing a long.  Check it:

New King Charles – Love Lust [mp3]

king charles

West London’s King Charles and his first single “Time Of Eternity” is still kicking my ass steadily.  Now he’s back with a new single “Love Lust” out on October 26th via Mi7.  While “Love Lust” doesn’t blow your head off like “Time Of Eternity”, it still packs a steam rolling rhythm, sick synth and guitar lines, and a bit of an island feel to the vocals.  Check it:

Also the B-side of this new single “Mr. Flick” kicks ass mightily as well so why not pick it up?

Remix: Memory Tapes take on Fool’s Gold’s Nadine

memory tapes

In addition to releasing the sweet Seek Magic, Memory Tapes has been busy remixing and being their usual awesome self.  This can be heard with their new version of Fool’s Gold’s “Nadine”.  As can be expected the song structure has been broken down the completely redesigned into a new audio form that pleases my ears.  Check it:

New Headlights – Get Going [mp3]

headlights

I was a bit late on Headlights‘ sophomore album Some Racing, Some Stopping that came out last year via Polyvinyl.  But when I finally picked it up I discovered what the rest of the world was high on.  The whole friggin pop rock album was GREAT.  Every song.  No lull.  No fall off.  This full on shebang was sweet candy coated music that put the kind of smile on me that was usually only reserved for when I was listening to the Rosebuds’ Birds Make Good Neighbors.  Well I’m not sleeping on these folks from Champaign, Illinois any longer.  They have a new album in the wings entitled Wildlife due out October 6th via Polyvinyl.  Here’s the glorious first single off it:

Hip Hop Is Back with Despot and FELT

despot

I’m an old school hip hop lover.  I get pumped for KRS, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, LL, Kool G Rap, Rakim, and EPMD.  Sadly it’s only on occasion that I stumble across some modern hip hop that I LOVE like those old joints.  Perhaps it’s due to the fact that this is primarily a rock/pop blog – so when people send me music, it usually falls in that realm.  Or maybe I’m just out of the “loop”.  Well I just fell back into it the other day when I heard new tracks from NYC’s Despot and the Murs and Slug combo FELT.  Despot’s “Look Alive” flat out kills mainly due to the fact that Ratatat produced it (it will be featured on a Def Jux comp found here).  I don’t think I need to add anything to that.  Just listen:

mp3: Despot – Look Alive (produced by Ratatat)

Next up is Slug and Murs with FELT’s “Protagonists”.  This one’s definitely produced by El-P and supposedly is slated for release on  a possible album Tribute To ____ _____.  Check it:

Suggested Listening: Julian Plenti

julian plenti

Paul Banks, the notable face/voice of Interpol, has a new solo venture Julian Plenti and album Julian Plenti…Is Skyscraper.  On a casual listen I might write this off to just “sound a lot like Interpol”.  The only reason for that deduction would be the uniqueness of Banks’ voice and songwriting that it makes it easy to tie Interpol and Plenti together.  On the whole Julian Plenti…Is Skyscraper travels everywhere Interpol can’t.  Soft and melodic, deep and orchestral, and most notably raw and personal.  This reminds me of last year’s Department Of Eagles, Rossen’s departure from Grizzly Bear.  This was an album that Rossen did things that he could never work into Grizzly Bear.  So Julian Plenti…Is Skyscraper wins me over in that regard.  Heartfelt.  Powerful.  A big range of musical exploration.  Solid album.
