Tonight in Baltimore don’t miss out on the craziness of the Dan Deacon Round Robin at Sonar with Deerhunter, No Age, Ed Schrader, White Rainbow, and Infinite Body also performing. That’s on the main stage. On the club stage another great Tax Lo Dance Party is in effect with Dave Nada, Simon Phoenix, Cullen Stalin, and Jackie O. Meanwhile also right next to that the Talking Head has a benefit show for Shannyn with Love Or Perish, Sick Weapons, The Art Department, and Future Islands on the bill. Down in DC M. Ward plays another night at the 9:30 Club with Chain and the Gang while Shortstack, Lorelei, and The Moderate play the Black Cat. Up north in Philly Foreign Born play Johnny Brenda’s with the Veils and Faces On Film while Soft Power and Gildon Works take on Kung Fu Necktie. Also the Danger Danger Gallery has Ear Pwr, Lovvers, Popo, Toro Y Moi! Enjoy!
Next week on August 4th Cale Parks, drummer for White Williams and Aloha, will release his third solo work, the EP To Swift Mars via Polyvinyl. Parks picks up right where he left off from last years Sparklace continuing to produce lavish well written songs fused with out of the ordinary drum arrangements and a host of obscure sounds flying around them. However on To Swift Mars Cale Parks has shifted to a smoother more melodic wall of sound method for his compositions. With Sparklace the drums were always in front and dominating the sounds with angular, sharp tones (similar to those of White Williams). On To Swift Mars Parks lets the other parts of the song simmer to the top and recall a close resemblance to the earlier work of Peter Gabriel and the like.
On August 19th Cale Parks and Lemonade take their tour to the Talking Head here in Baltimore and we happen to have a pair of tickets to give away. Email us, tweet us (DM please), or comment on this post to enter. The winner will be chosen by next Friday so get in on it!
I knew this news was coming soon! Sea Wolf has announced the release of White Water White Bloom for September 22nd via Dangerbird Records as well as given us a new track “Stanislaus”. While it doesn’t have that powerful punch like “Black Dirt”, it still lights my fire for sure! Actually “Stanislaus” conveys their live sound better than any recording they have to date in my opinion. Check it:
Speaking of live sound, Sea Wolf will also be embarking on a fall tour starting in September. They swing our way when they hit up the Talking Head on October 18th with Sara Lov. Check the rest of the dates after the jump.
I’ve been having a Weird Tapes, Memory Cassette, Memory Tapes kind of week. So when this Weird Tapes rework of Peter Bjorn and John’s “It Don’t Move Me” hit my desktop – I was EXCITED! As with seemingly all Weird Tapes remixes the end product is in another realm compared to the original. Their version of “It Don’t Move Me” is a bouncy electro bass wonder with very little of the original track remaining. Beautiful Weird Tapes!
Tonight down in DC M. Ward takes on the 9:30 Club with Chain and The Gang whilst Poor But Sexy, XYZ Affair and Prabir and the Substitutes kill it at DC9. Also the Fort Reno extravaganza continues with Title Tracks, Casper Bangs, and Grendel Babies. Across the way in Arlington Iota has a good one with Cass McCombs, Jennifer O’Connor, and Mike Bones. Up north in Philly there’s a plethora of shows tonight including Birdie Busch, Drew mills, and Le Fits at Kung Fu Necktie. Also Cage plays the First Unitarian Church, Fleet Foxes hit up the Electric Factory with Espers, and Polvo rock Johnny Brenda’s with Obits. Finally the famous duo of Billy Joel and Elton John play Citizens Bank Park. Enjoy!
Awwww yeeeaaah! We have a pair of tickets to give away to next Saturday’s super amazing Cursive, The Love Language, and Deleted Scenes show at the Ottobar here in Baltimore. Email us, tweet us (DM please), or comment on this post to enter. The winner will be chosen by next Wednesday so act fast!
The other day while in the midst of putting together this week’s concert calendar, I received an email from Neil of the Texas band Talking Tiger Mountain. He was clueing me in on Saturday’s show at the Golden West Cafe featuring Peter & The Wolf, MacGregor Burns Band, Beans, and his new venture Soft Cat. So I slotted into the calendar and decided to take a little internet stroll over to Soft Cat’s myspace. I was expecting to hear some earthy rots like folkish rock music in line with Deer Tick (ala Talking Tiger Mountain). This was not the case. The music that combed my ears was soft building poignant odysseys. In fact they had a similar feel to The Antlers and Peter & The Wolf (go figure). Those are just the comparisons I initially drew…these songs of Soft Cat were just plain great and I was so impressed I wanted to know more about them.
Soft Cat is based in Baltimore and features Neil of Talking Tiger Mountain as well as members of Weekends, Andy Abelow, and other Baltimore/Texas bands. Here’s what Neil had to say about it:
The main idea for the project is to gather and produce a symphonic birthday present for the burden of the everyday via quiet and delicate songs, textures, and lyrics. First starting as a personal outlet for songwriting, Soft Cat has turned into a process of gathering inspiration and representing it the best way I know how. I constantly wishing to broaden the recordings by inviting as many musicians and friends into the studio to help create something personal and pleasant to share as a gift to anyone willing to listen.
There’s a split EP Cassette/CD with Talking Tiger Mountain due out in September (we’ll keep you posted). Here’s an unmixed version of one of the best songs I’ve heard in a while:
At the beginning of this month I posted on a band, Ice Palace, that hit me with some delightfully confusing grunge folk rockingness with their album Wonder Subtly Crushing Us. Well they’ve also released a new video fro the solid rock track “Thoughts/Facts” featuring a slew of bands performing the same track. But which one is the real band? I’ll give you a hint – it’s not the one with the female lead singer and it’s definitely not the electro rockers…
mp3: Ice Palace – Thoughts/Facts
You can catch them in Philly at The Fire on September 7th with River City Extension. More dates at their myspace.
