Today seems to be the quietest day of the week in terms of concerts. There is one though that features Baltimore’s Ear Pwr at Floristree. This one should be some top notch entertainment, so head on out if you can. Here’s some tunes to get you in the mood:
It’s hard not to be sucked into Discovery aka Wes from Ra Ra Riot and Rostam from Vampire Weekend. Allstars collaborations like that garner a lot of attention and a lot of listens. Their new LP, LP (out July 7th via XL), is pleasing to the ears and great all around summertime music. The tracks featuring Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend simply KILL. Add “So Insane” and that’s a formidable trio of synth heavy 808 banging five star tracks. The rest of the album is O.K. The auto-tune is tiresome. Didn’t Jay-Z kill it? Oh well, LP is still on whole a good bit of fun and isn’t that what we all need for these hot days and hard times?
Noah and The Whale are back with a new album, The First Days Of Spring, in August. Last years Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down was a happy go lucky upbeat pop gem of an album, but it seems with this one they are pushing their sound in different ways. Take a listen to the large, spacious, and dramatic sounds of the title track that the band was so nice to offer up for free:
I was wondering where I had heard this track before and remembered they had done a Daytrotter Session earlier on. Low and behold here’s a much disparate version of the same track:
Beck, ya gotta love ‘em. Not only does he consistently produce strong album after strong album, he also enjoys being the innovator. A new section has been added to his website called “Record Club” where he and a group of pals go into the studio to cover/record an entire classic album. The first of which is the famous/infamous and essential The Velvet Underground & Nico. There will more tunes popping up on his site from this recording session, but for now take an ear to “Sunday Morning”.
Ahhh…soft chamber pop music that slows down the blistering current of my frenzied work day mind. The inspiriting breeze of Sweden’s South Ambulance is oh so fine. They’ve just released their EP#5, the second of a trio of EPs being put out by Indiecater Records. South Ambulance gained some notoriety when they put out their debut S/T album via Labrador a few years ago, but this was the first time I had sat down to listen to them. They have that Beach Boys vibe like so many bands do, but the summer day whisks all that away and I’m left with some comforting pop music to doze off to…is it 5 O’clock yet?
Cale Parks just keeps on trucking these days. Touring with Passion Pit, Ted Leo, and Harlem Shakes for the last few months didn’t slow him down at all because now he’s set to release a new EP To Swift Mars on August 4th via Polyvinyl. A follow up to the wondrous Sparklace, To Swift Mars has Parks dabbling in a tad more immediately style of pop. He was nice enough to give us all a taste of the new sound with “One At A Time”. Take a listen:
Don’t miss Cale Parks when he comes to Baltimore on August 19th to the Talking Head supporting the release. Lemonade will also be performing. Stay tuned in the next few weeks…we might have something special up our sleeves for this EP.
Just in cased you missed this before, he also remixed Ra Ra Riot recently:
Fever Ray’s newest single “Triangle Walks” has drawn a few great remixes recently and that continues with James Rutledge’s rework of the special tune. He doesn’t drastically change the structure of the song, but lightens it up in areas and gives it a bit more sunshine to where it actually sounds like it could be on one of the earlier The Knife albums.
