The last day of May is fairly quiet, but there are a few quality shows around. Here in Baltimore Santigold rolls into Rams Head Live with Amanda Blank and Trouble Andrew. Down in DC the 9:30 Club has day two of the evenings with Cake. Enjoy!
There’s been a lot of buzz going ’round Emanuel And The Fear. Sold out shows, hyped up reviews, etc. It was only natural for me to be completely oblivious to all this hoopla. Well not anymore. Emanuel And The Fear and their 11 piece orchestra and Sufjan meets the dance floor sound has charmed me and hooked me. They’re working on a full length now, but here’s a track from their self titled EP out right now:

Metric have a new video for one of my personal favorites, “Sick Muse”, off of Fantasies. They are literally up against the wall and in the spotlight for this one…and also completely foolin’ ’round. Enjoy!
It’s hard to think any remix could top any of the originals on Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion. Stones Throws’ Dam-Funk gave it a shot with their light synth rework of “Summertime Clothes”. It’s definitely no where close to being as good as the original, but I do like it. It’s got a bit of that feathered hair/long strut attitude that was always missing from AC.
Tonight there’s a crap-load of shows all over. The Wind Up Space here in Baltimore has Whistlin’ Charlie, the Moderate, and Person Parcel while the Ottobar has an all day/all night summer event kicking with Supersuckers, Desert Boys, The Expotentials, Chaser, and The Headshakes. Also there’s an old school hip hop show with Brand Nubian going down at Sonar with the magnificent Biz Markie, Ogun, E Major, and DJ Two Teks on the bill as well. That’s on the main stage, the club stage has a TAXLO extravaganza with Tim Sweeney, Cullen Stalin, Simon Phoenix, and more. Also right there at the Talking Head Deer Tick, Caleb Stine, and Noble Lake perform. Yikes that’s a lot of good music for one city to have. Wait there’s more! Down in DC The Antlers, Au Revoir Simone, and Jeffrey Lewis play the Rock and Roll Hotel while Cake plays the 9:30 Club. Up north in Philly Height, Ed Schrader, and Gavin Riley kick a Baltimore-esque show at Pilam while Paper Route plays the North Star Bar with Young Love. Enjoy!
Imagine when the Beatles hit their experimental phase they decided to really go way OUT THERE and stray far from their pop chains – the result might sound like Circulatory System’s Signal Morning. This album has pop song aspirations but they get sliced, diced, mangled, and re-sewn by the mad composer that is W. Cullen Hart. Signal Morning has been in the works for about seven and a half years being pieced together from hours and hours of recorded material from time at several different studios. Also Hart wrote Signal Morning while battling Multiple Sclerosis, a tragic condition, but endured and ended up creating an explosive, looming, large, yet sometimes tender symphony of experimental pop. Signal Morning features all the members of The Olivia Tremor Control and Jeff Magnum and Julian Koster of Neutral Milk Hotel. An impressive feat to make this album with an impressive supporting cast. There’s been quite a few WOW albums that have come out this year – this will be one more to add to that list. Signal Morning comes out on August 4th. Here’s a few of my favorite moments, but really an album like this works best as a whole so make sure you mark the date on your calendar and pick it up this summer.
School Of Seven Bells have just released the third single, “My Cabal”, off of the stunning Alpinisms (Ghostly International). The single comes packed with an instrumental of “My Camarilla”, a Seefeel remix of “Chain”, and a sweet re-dux of “Face to Face on High Places” by Jesu. Check “My Cabal” and Jesu remix right now:
YACHT’s new album See Mystery Lights comes out on July 28th via DFA but they’ve given us another taste with “Psychic City”. THIS SONG GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD. BE WARNED! Something sweet and nice about YACHT is that they’ve given everyone the ability possibly the most detailed account of an origin of a song complete with the original version called “Voodoo City” by Rich Jensen and an instrumental version as well.
