The Run Down – Monday June 30, 2008

All the shows must have went on vacation this week, but there is one good one around town.  In DC the Black Cat has Takka Takka, Frightened Rabbit, and Oxford Collapse.  Go on down there because everything else seems a little slow…including myself.  Photo by Phillip C. Kim

Tonight in DC is a fabulous show at the Red and the Black with Austin’s Belaire, or if you’re going for a more mainstream flavor, then why not go big at the Wachovia Spectrum in Philly with Coldplay.  That’s it?  photo by Wylie Maercklein

Get really relaxed with High on Stress….

Hailing from Minneapolis, and drawing on the sounds of Wilco, Spoon, and Neil Young, High on Stress have a classic sound that would fit just as well in an old west saloon as it would in an oxygen bar in Brooklyn. Well, maybe an oxygen bar that likes alt-folky goodness. Not one of those crappy ones that plays techno. Anywho, High on Stress have an instantly likable vibe. And they were nice enough to send along a track from their soon to be released album.

We could all use The Boxing Lesson

The Boxing Lesson have what can only be described as an epic sound. While pondering a way to describe their sound, all I can think of are ridiculous over-the-top slow motion scenes in movies. Planes crashing into fireballs, winning touchdowns being caught, villains falling to their death. That kind of thing. The songs just cascade over you, putting you in a trance. But this isn’t just trippy new wave music that can be fade into the background. Crunchy guitars, emotional vocals and timely synth punch make for a very distinctive sound.

Amazingly, this is only a three piece, hailing from the new musical mecca Austin, TX and are in the midst of a west coast swing. Dates after the jump.
