Bowerbirds Re-Release Hymns For A Dark Horse with Bonus Tracks

Last November we mentioned here how we were completely hooked on Bowerbirds’ Hymns For A Dark Horse. Well that release didn’t get to as many places as they would have liked, so on June 17th, they’re re-releasing it on Dead Oceans. For those fans that already own it, you might want to grab this for two new bonus tracks, or maybe you’d want it on vinyl (which wasn’t available before). In case you’ve forgotten that Bowerbirds goodness, here’s a taste:

Friday (I’m A Remix)

Have you ever been so busy that one moment it’s Sunday and you’re drinking a sip of coffee in the morning, then the next  moment it’s 4:30 on Friday and your work week is almost over?   That’s how this week has been for me.  I can recall momentary blurs of life on each day, but the rest is a haze.  I’m in a good mood, though, so something must be going right.  How are you dealing with the hazy days?

mp3: Sunny Day Sets Fire – Wilderness (CSS Remix)

mp3: New Young Pony Club – Get Lucky (The Twelves Remix)

mp3: Kanye West – Get ‘em High (Ratatat Remix)

mp3: Lykke Li – I’m Good, I’m Gone (Black Kids Remix)

In The Kitchen With The Jealous Girlfriends

While attending the fabulous show of Sea Wolf and The Jealous Girlfriends last Sunday at the Rock and Roll Hotel (reviewed here), Evilhomer and I were super excited to get a chance to sit down with singer/guitarist Holly and drummer Mike of The Jealous Girlfriends (reviewed here) for a friendly chat before they set out to hopefully get a proper sound check. As they walked in Holly spotted an old upright piano in the corner that she declared was the site of the after party. Both of them were a delight to speak with. To get a full sense of the mood, please add a great deal of laughter every other line or so. Read the full story after the jump.

PP: How Long have you been on this tour now?
Mike: One day.
Holly
: Yeah we just got on this gravy train. 21 more shows I think.
PP: 21? That’s a lot of shows. We were lucky enough to catch you on tour with Nada Surf. What was it like touring with them?
Holly: Great. They’re great.
Mike: We live very close to them.
Holly: Mathew and I do laundry together.
PP: So you have this album, which is pretty great, if I do say so myself. What was going on in getting it ready for release?
Holly: This album has been ready for a while. We’ve just been waiting for the right equation. We kind of spiced it up a little. We added Secret Identity to the record and took off another song. It’s been a long time coming. I’m still excited about and I still listen to it…like alone

Booming Great Bloomers

So you’re down south in some dusty Texas saloon drinking your worries away. A screeching sound blazes out from the corner of the dank bar. There’s Sonic Youth decked out in full country garb (with ten gallon hats and all). They go on to play countrified versions of their normal crazy set. That’s the type of sound that comes across when I listen to the Great Bloomers new EP. They have a country/folk inspired sense of indie rock, but their audio tendencies lack the structure that usually pairs with that genre. The Great Bloomers slide on the edge of experimental often associated with bands like Sonic Youth or Grizzly Bear. So the end result is a free flowing country sound that is unlike anything I’ve really heard in a long time. Go ahead. Take a seat at the bar. Tie one on with Toronto’s Great Bloomers. They’ve also just signed with Grifter Music (Sea Wolf, The Old Soul) and have a debut album in the works.
