Caribou recently released a new track, “Odessa”, that manage to slip through the cracks of Pasta Primavera. But now that I’ve realized my mistake, I can clearly see why this song is being talked about and why I should talk about it as well. Dan Snaith, the brilliant mind behind Caribou, literally puts every sound imaginable into this lengthy, almost club-like, jam. Yet it doesn’t feel cluttered at all. “Odessa” is from the upcoming album Swim which comes out on April 20th via Merge. Here’s what Snaith had to say about the album:
“The most important thing for me with this record was finding my own sonic vocabulary. That’s why I’m proud of this record.”
Can’t wait! After the jump you can check the tracklist. For now take a listen to your new favorite track:
How friggin great is Mos Def. A new track has surfaced (thanks to Kanye) called “The Tournament”. Apparently it’s an outtake from his sweet LP The Ecstatic. This could have easily fit into that album, but I’m just happy to hear it now in all of its Godfather sampling glory. Take a listen:
San Diego’s Rafter Roberts aka Rafter has just released the first taste of his upcoming album Animal Feelings with the track “Paper”. People familiar with Rafter’s sound will notice that “Paper” is right at home with his wild and garish pop sound. It’s like Of Montreal messing ’round with Justin Timberlake…yeah that’ll do. Animal Feelings comes out on April 13th via Asthmatic Kitty.
Blah blah blah blah…it doesn’t matter what I write right now…it’s a brand new (leaked…officially…sort of) Gorillaz track off of the upcoming highly anticipated album Plastic Beach!!!! Check it:
In December the mysterious band from Sweden, jj, was signed to the always awesome label, Secretly Canadian. SC will be releasing their follow up to the outstanding jj nº 2 with (you guessed it) jj nº 3 (out March 9th). The other day jj took their kindness a little further by making some new tracks available for all to enjoy. Take a listen to “My Way” (keeping up with their sweet sound but adding Weezy to the mix) and “Let Go” (a more subdued affair):
Brooklyn band Bear Hands is about to release a new single “What A Drag” in February, but you can download it free via their website for the next month. They bring back the same energetic rocknroll sound some how creating a heavenly blend of Modest Mouse and The Pixies whilst bringing in some new found synths to spice it all up. “What A Drag” has me even more pumped about this band. I’m still wondering where the album’s at though…
Coming on the heels of a stellar EP Early Morning Risers, Dinosaur Feathers are set to release their debut full length in March entitled Fantasy Memorial. They were nice enough to make the first single, “Vendela Vida”, available to us (and you). I was thrown off a bit when that latin flavor rolls in, but then it all morphs into some early 60s era echoed pop goodness. Check it:
California’s Rogue Wave always manages to put out solid music, but I was kind of thrown off a little when taking in the new single “Good Morning” off the upcoming Permalight LP (out March 2nd). They’ve dabbled in electronics before but the intensity was never this strong (nor this dance floor oriented) and at first I was put off…then I listened to it a few more times and really started to enjoy the track a great deal. The rough synth worked well with RW’s songwriting style for sure. Check it:
