We’ve reached midday here and I’m starting to fade fast (that Memory Tapes from the morning only buzzed me for so long). Lucky for me (and you) I’ve been spicin’ up my lunch break with a cover from Grizzly Bear. Thanks to the persisitence of Australia’s Triple J, we now have a beautiful toned down (in the way GB can only do) redux of the classic Hot Chip track “Boy From School”.

Wow. This might just be better than their “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” cover.
Speaking of Hot Chip, they have a new album out today called One Life Stand. Get it. Here’s a track off of it:

I’ve been listing to Taken By Trees‘ East Of Eden, their upcoming album out on September 8th via Rough Trade, for the last few weeks now and I’ve decided that it is praiseworthy. Victoria Bergsman went out on a limb and traveled to Pakistan to record the album with sufi musicians. The result is a beautiful amalgam of middle eastern rhythms and vibes sewn together with Bergsman’s soft folk songwriting. An interesting highlight is her translation of perhaps one of the biggest songs of the year – Animal Collective’s “My Girls”. As can be expected it’s a timid affair compared to the original, but I do find that Bergsman does the song justice by reducing it to such a simple form – and re-titles it “My Boys” (perhaps to make it somewhat here own?).

On the flip side of all of this, the first single from East Of Eden “Watch The Waves” has received a re-work courtesy of the mysterious Weird Tapes/Memory Cassette mash Memory Tapes. Take a listen….it’s good.

I rarely post covers on this blog, but two have been floating through the interweb recently that I’m enjoying quite a bit. One is from the soundtrack to The Time Traveler’s Wife and it’s a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by Broken Social Scene. The other is Atlas Sound’s rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Walk A Thin Line”. Both are laid back and breezy affairs that almost cool me off on this humid Baltimore afternoon. Enjoy!

Beck, ya gotta love ‘em. Not only does he consistently produce strong album after strong album, he also enjoys being the innovator. A new section has been added to his website called “Record Club” where he and a group of pals go into the studio to cover/record an entire classic album. The first of which is the famous/infamous and essential The Velvet Underground & Nico. There will more tunes popping up on his site from this recording session, but for now take an ear to “Sunday Morning”.

Also this isn’t the first time Beck went on a cover streak is it?

Tonight Evan Voytas is playing DC with the New Numbers and Team B at DC9 (tomorrow he’s at Kung Fu Necktie in Philly). To get everyone excited for these few dates he’s doing right now, Mr. Voytas was kind enough to put out onto the internets a sweet cover of a rare b-side of The Cure, “A Few Hours After This…”. Take a listen:
